Welcome to the Magical, Mysterious World of Estheticians!

First things first: No, estheticians do not have a magic wand. (Although, trust me, there are days I wish I did. Think of the possibilities: Zap! Goodbye, blackhead. Poof! Hello, glowing, hydrated skin.) And it is not part of our job description, those are fairy godmothers not estheticians, here is what we actually do. But since I’ve been peppered with “Where do estheticians actually work?” lately—and not just from my mom, who still imagines me as a rogue face lotion bandit—I figured it’s about time to lay the beauty towel flat and spill the serum.

Honestly, if you picture us as faceless scrubbers stuck in a beige room with whale music and one beige client after another…well, delete that thought right now. (Delete. Empty recycle bin. There you go.) Our “work environment” is more of a choose-your-own-adventure story than a chapter from Boring Skin Care for Dummies.

Let’s start with the Spa. That’s the classic narrative, right? Candlelight flickers. Enya plays. Peace. Tranquility. Someone in a waffle robe sighs blissfully in the next room. But real life? Sometimes it’s peaceful. Sometimes there’s a giggle fit in the waxing room and the Lemon Verbena diffuser won’t stop leaking. Oops.

But that’s just one scene. Salons? Oh yes. Bustling, buzzing, full of hair flying and makeup palettes open like neon butterflies. I love popping into the break room for a “Do you have a spare lash glue?” and leaving with a zero-calorie gossip update. Estheticians in salons are masters of the fifteen-minute express facial and the perfect motivation for all of us to exfoliate once a week. (Yes, I’m talking to you, Karen.)

You’ll find us in dermatologist offices, too. Here? Science rules and my white lab coat gets its time to shine. Think of facials with an extra splash of clinical knowledge. We collaborate with doctors to tackle acne and hyperpigmentation—skincare specialist, detectives if you prefer, who meets medical mystery. (If I had a business card, that would absolutely be on there.)

Medical spas are for advanced treatments: lasers, peels, micro-whosie-whatsits. This is where we turn skincare up to eleven. Sure, it sounds fancy, but it’s still about making people feel at home. (Even if “home” now involves a little zap-zap action and a waft of medical-grade peppermint.)

Mobile estheticians? Yes, that’s a thing. Picture this: I pull up to your driveway in my skincare-mobile, a trunk packed with serums and dreams, ready to transform your living room into a glowing oasis. (Sorry about the glitter. It just…spreads.)

And did you know there are estheticians in cruise ships, wellness retreats, and even backstage at fashion shows? True story: Sometimes we provide touch-ups to models between runway sprints, armed with blotting paper and nerves of steel. High fashion, no pressure (I lie, it’s all pressure).

But here’s the truth hidden among the aromatherapy oils and LED masks: The real esthetician work environment is anywhere there’s someone wanting to feel fresh, confident, and cared for. Our settings are as varied as the colors of a 120-shade eyeshadow palette (and just as fun to explore).

So the next time you wonder where estheticians really thrive? The answer is: basically, everywhere. Wherever there’s a need for skin, comfort, and maybe—just maybe—a little magic.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an avocado mask to mix and a playlist to change. (Enya, it’s been great, but today, we’re feeling Lizzo.)
