It’s a David VS David final. Surprise, surprise.

I wasn’t at all surprised when Seisha Mercado was deprived of the slot in American Idol’s final two. Not because advertisers (and the judges themselves) have been huffing about a “David-vs-David” final practically since the season started. (And perhaps, rightly so, because those two boys are the strongest contenders, vocally.) It ’s because — well, perhaps my dad (who’s an even bigger Idol fan that I am) summed it up best:

“Majority of Idol’s voting public is female. She’s no contest against these two handsome men.”

(Actually my English translation is horrible. He said it better in Filipino: (pointing at Seisha) “Eh hindi talaga makakalusot yan sa Finals. Mga babae ang bumoboto eh, ano’ng sinabi n’ya sa dalawang gwapo?”)

And at this stage of the competition, even getting in a million votes would not be good enough if the competition has a few hundred thousand votes ahead of you. So to get more votes, she needed more admirers. It’s really too bad she’s the only girl left.

I suppose the biggest problem she has is, her appeal is quite forgettable. Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s an incredibly beautiful woman. She’s got the moves, too; she can dance very well. And she sounds extraordinary. But there’s something about her that is quite too ordinary; she just doesn’t have that recall factor, you know? As much as I like her, she does have that aura that she’s someone you’ve seen before. For some reason, her uniqueness does not transfer onto television.

Having said that, I still think it’s a mistake to see her go.

I have nothing against David Archuleta at all; I think he’s a walking miracle and a living reminder of how wonderful life is, for to be given such a second chance is such a huge blessing. I mean, for a guy who’s lost his voice, he sure can sing! Not to mention he’s such a good-looking kid, too! :) And he definitely has that recall factor Seisha (most likely) lacks.

But for me, I suppose that formed part of the problem. Have voters been cutting David A. waaay too much slack, letting his boyish, clean, wholesome good looks (or worse, even his once-disability) cloud their better judgment? Vocally, yes, he’s really good. And really smart, too. Simon Cowell has always praised him for his intelligent song choices. Maybe even one of the best. He definitely deserved his spot in the top three. But compare it with Seisha’s range? As in, objectively? I personally think she’s the better vocal performer.

For another thing, David A. simply lacks the stage presence. He simply doesn’t have that command that would draw passersby for a second look. Possibly because he’s young? It’s just not his personality? Who knows? When comparing it with Seisha’s performance skills, the girl wins, hands down. (Of course, David A. is still waaay better than Carrie Underwood in Season 4. She was a singing robot, concentrating too much on the song than actually feeling it. Really, Bo Bice should have won, but it’s good that Carrie’s finally learned how to let go of her mechanical singing charm.)

On that note, David Cook should win! :D He’s simply what the competition needs to break free from the goody-goody stereotype of all previous winners. Come on, viewers, you passed on Bo Bice and Chris Daughtry — America needs a rocker for an Idol! :P (Although come to think of it, both Bo and Daughtry are doing very well in their careers. Perhaps even better than previous Idol winners Reuben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Taylor Hicks! There really does seem to be an American Idol curse; win the competition, say hello to a lukewarm career. Just look at Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Katherine McPhee, and even Kelie Pickler (!). They never won the contest, but they sure got healthy careers!)

*sigh* Oh well. Seisha’s not the first talented performer to be booted out too early in the competition, anyway. Remember LaToya London of Season 4? I’m Filipino, but I didn’t like Jasmine Trias that much, that I would pass on talent such as LaToya! But like it or not, the likability factor is always the deciding factor. (I refuse to credit Vote For The Worst for anything!)
